Rift & Tide Africa believes that travel should protect the places, people and wildlife that make East Africa extraordinary. Safaris, gorilla trekking journeys, beach holidays and cultural experiences are not ordinary products. They depend on living landscapes, local communities, fragile ecosystems, skilled guides, conservation areas and the trust of travellers who want their journey to have a positive footprint.
Our Sustainable Tourism Policy explains how we approach responsible travel across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, including coastal extensions to the Indian Ocean where they form part of a journey. It applies to the way we plan itineraries, select suppliers, advise travellers, work with travel agents and communicate about destinations.
Sustainability is not a slogan for us. It is a practical way of planning travel with more care, more honesty and more respect for the region we call home.
Scope of This Policy
This policy applies to:
private tailor-made safaris;
scheduled departures;
gorilla trekking and primate journeys;
safari and beach holidays;
Plan with safari specialists

Whether you are sketching a private safari, a gorilla trekking extension, a beach escape, a family holiday or an itinerary for your clients, Rift & Tide Africa helps turn the idea into a clear, bookable travel plan.
Tell us what excites you most. We will refine the route, timing, accommodation level and coastal extension where it strengthens the journey.

day trips and excursions;
travel agent and advisor support;
supplier selection and itinerary design;

It also guides how we communicate with lodges, camps, ground handlers, guides, transport providers, conservation partners, community projects and other suppliers involved in delivering travel services.
Our Sustainable Tourism Principles
Rift & Tide Africa is guided by the following principles.
Protect Wildlife and Natural Habitats
Wildlife is one of East Africa's greatest treasures. We support travel practices that respect animals, protect habitats and avoid behaviour that places wildlife under unnecessary pressure.
We encourage travellers to:
keep a respectful distance from wildlife;
follow guide instructions during game drives and walks;
avoid feeding, touching or provoking animals;
respect park, conservancy and reserve rules;
avoid loud behaviour around wildlife;
avoid requesting off-road driving where it is not permitted;
support ethical wildlife experiences rather than exploitative attractions.
For gorilla trekking and other primate experiences, travellers must follow official guidance from park authorities and guides. This includes distance rules, group conduct, health precautions, time limits and respectful behaviour in forest environments.
Plan Routes That Reduce Unnecessary Strain
Sustainable travel is also about good routing. Poorly planned itineraries can create unnecessary driving, rushed transfers, traveller fatigue and avoidable operational pressure.
When planning journeys, Rift & Tide Africa considers:
realistic travel distances;
sensible overnight stops;
whether a road transfer or internal flight is more appropriate;
the number of destinations in relation to available travel days;
the impact of overloading an itinerary;
whether a beach extension or rest day would improve the journey;
seasonal conditions that may affect roads, parks and traveller comfort.
A smoother itinerary is often a more responsible itinerary. It gives travellers a better experience and reduces the pressure created by rushed movement.
Support Local Communities and Fair Economic Benefit
Travel should create value for the people who live in and around the places travellers visit. We aim to work with suppliers, guides and experiences that support local employment, fair opportunity and respectful engagement with host communities.
Where community visits or cultural experiences are included, they should be conducted with dignity, consent and clear benefit to the people involved. We do not support experiences that turn communities into spectacles or pressure people into performances that are not fairly arranged.
We encourage travellers to:
buy locally made products where appropriate;
ask before taking photographs of people;
respect local customs and dress expectations;
use local guides where suitable;
avoid bargaining in a way that undermines fair income;
engage with communities respectfully and without intrusion.
Choose Suppliers With Responsible Practices
Rift & Tide Africa works with a range of lodges, camps, hotels, guides, transport providers and local partners. We prefer suppliers who demonstrate responsible practices in areas such as employment, conservation, waste management, water use, energy use, community benefit, guest safety and ethical wildlife conduct.
When reviewing suppliers, we consider whether they:
operate legally and professionally;
respect conservation and park regulations;
treat staff and guides fairly;
support local hiring and training;
manage waste responsibly;
reduce single-use plastics where possible;
use water and energy carefully;
communicate honestly with guests;
respect cultural and community contexts;
maintain appropriate safety standards.
Not every supplier will be perfect, and sustainability varies by location, price level and infrastructure. Our role is to make thoughtful choices and continue improving the quality of partners we recommend.
Reduce Waste and Plastic Use
Waste management is a real challenge in many travel destinations. We encourage travellers and suppliers to reduce unnecessary waste, especially single-use plastic.
Rift & Tide Africa encourages:
refillable water bottles where safe and practical;
reduced use of disposable plastic bottles;
responsible disposal of waste during travel;
avoiding littering in parks, towns, beaches and communities;
choosing accommodations with practical waste-reduction measures;
keeping beaches, trails, forests and safari areas clean.
Travellers should never leave litter in vehicles, parks, picnic sites, campsites, forest trails, beaches or public spaces.
Respect Water, Energy and Fragile Environments
Many safari camps, lodges and coastal properties operate in areas where water, energy and infrastructure must be used carefully. Travellers can support sustainability by being mindful of resource use.
We encourage guests to:
take reasonable-length showers;
reuse towels where comfortable;
switch off lights, fans, air conditioning and chargers when not needed;
avoid wasting water in dry areas;
follow lodge guidance on laundry and water use;
respect fragile landscapes, dunes, reefs, forests and wetlands.
Small choices matter when many people travel through sensitive environments.
Promote Ethical Cultural Travel
Cultural experiences should be respectful, honest and beneficial. Rift & Tide Africa supports cultural travel that helps visitors learn, while respecting the dignity, privacy and agency of local people.
We do not support staged or exploitative encounters that misrepresent communities or create discomfort for hosts. Travellers should remember that homes, villages, markets, places of worship and community spaces are part of people's real lives.
Traveller conduct should always be guided by respect, humility and curiosity.
Protect Children and Vulnerable People
Rift & Tide Africa does not support tourism practices that exploit children or vulnerable people. Travellers should not give sweets, money or gifts directly to children in ways that encourage dependency, begging or unsafe interactions.
Where guests wish to support schools, children's programmes or community initiatives, this should be done through appropriate, transparent and locally accountable channels.
Photography of children should only happen with clear permission from responsible adults and in a manner that respects privacy and dignity.
Support Responsible Coastal and Marine Travel
For safari-and-beach journeys, we encourage responsible behaviour along the Indian Ocean coast. Coastal ecosystems are sensitive, and travellers should treat beaches, reefs and marine life with care.
We encourage travellers to:
avoid touching coral or marine animals;
use reef-safe sunscreen where possible;
avoid buying products made from shells, coral, endangered species or illegal wildlife materials;
dispose of waste properly;
respect local fishing communities;
choose marine activities that follow safety and environmental standards.
Beach holidays should be restful, but they should also be respectful of the coastal communities and ecosystems that make them possible.
Traveller Responsibilities
Sustainable travel depends on both the operator and the traveller. Guests are expected to behave responsibly, follow local laws and respect the guidance of guides, park authorities, lodge teams and community hosts.
Travellers should:
read pre-travel information carefully;
follow park, conservancy, forest and marine rules;
respect wildlife distance and behaviour guidelines;
treat guides, staff, hosts and other travellers respectfully;
avoid littering;
avoid damaging natural or cultural sites;
dress appropriately where local customs require it;
ask before photographing people;
travel with appropriate insurance;
report concerns quickly if something feels unsafe or inappropriate.
Responsible travel is a shared effort.
Our Approach to Conservation Fees and Protected Areas
Many journeys include national parks, reserves, conservancies, forests, marine parks and protected areas. Entry fees, permits and conservation charges help support the management of these areas, although rules and fees vary by destination and may change.
Rift & Tide Africa communicates known fees and requirements during the quotation and booking process. Travellers should understand that protected-area fees, gorilla permits, conservancy charges and similar costs are part of what makes responsible access possible.
Where fees change after quotation, the updated official or supplier rate may apply according to the booking terms.
Communications and Honest Marketing
We aim to market destinations responsibly. This means avoiding misleading promises, unrealistic wildlife guarantees or language that disrespects local people, cultures or environments.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Seasons vary. Travel conditions can change. Beaches, roads, parks and lodges are affected by weather, conservation rules, flight schedules and supplier operations.
Rift & Tide Africa will communicate as clearly as possible so travellers can make informed decisions.
Working With Travel Agents and Advisors
Travel advisors are important partners in responsible tourism. When working with agents, Rift & Tide Africa aims to provide practical information that helps advisors sell East Africa accurately and responsibly.
This includes guidance on:
realistic routing;
seasonality;
park and permit rules;
safari-and-beach combinations;
appropriate accommodation levels;
responsible wildlife conduct;
cultural sensitivity;
traveller preparation.
We encourage advisors to share sustainability guidance with clients before travel.
Continuous Improvement
Sustainable tourism is an ongoing process. Rift & Tide Africa will continue reviewing how journeys are planned, how suppliers are selected, how travellers are informed and how policies are communicated.
We welcome feedback from travellers, travel agents, guides, suppliers and community partners. Constructive feedback helps us improve.
Reporting Concerns
If a traveller, supplier, guide, agent or community member has a concern related to wildlife welfare, environmental damage, community disrespect, unsafe conduct, exploitation, unethical supplier behaviour or any issue connected to this policy, they should contact Rift & Tide Africa.
